PHOENIX–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sam Thomasson, founder of Zounds Hearing Inc., was awarded the EO of the Year Award at the Arizona Corporate Excellence ceremony on November 4th at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Ray Schey, publisher of the Phoenix Business Journal, presided over the evening honoring the top 50 largest privately held businesses. Thomasson was singled out as the CEO of the Year for his leadership at Zounds Hearing in providing top quality hearing aid technology to anyone with mild, moderate, or moderate/severe hearing loss.

Thomasson understands the problems and frustrations facing the hearing impaired. His daughter, Kate, lost her hearing due to an illness and high fever at 13 months old. As a child, she struggled to understand and vocalize speech and suffered with poorly performing hearing aids. “Her hearing aids would frequently squeal causing her pain, and the feedback she heard often kept her from understanding what others were saying,” said Thomasson. “As an engineer, it became my goal to make her life better by creating a hearing aid that solved those problems.” In his acceptance speech, Thomasson spoke of the positive impact Zounds hearing aids make in Kate’s life today and credited her for providing a new direction in his career and purpose in life.

Thomasson established Zounds Hearing in 2005 with a handful of employees and has grown the Zounds Hearing franchise business to over 220 stores across the nation. His early career was spent developing groundbreaking technologies in the medical device consumer electronics industries, where he created 52 patents that enable Zounds to dramatically improve the performance of hearing aids. “It is an honor to be recognized as CEO of the Year,” said Thomasson. “But I’m the first to admit that it’s my committed team of professionals that have made our company great. Their hard work and dedication to our mission has been the defining difference between a good company and great one.”

“Sam is a dynamic man, both as a CEO and as a personal friend,” said Raj Kapur, CFO of Zounds Hearing. “As the head of a large and complex company, he creates new and innovative technology to improve hearing aid technology for the hearing impaired, and is greatly revered in his community. He is the best choice for this award.”
